the all street journal

Public demonstrations from 2020 - 2021.

The All Street Journal was established as a protest group in the Summer of 2020. The group organized community arts events and demonstrations in public spaces in New York City and collaborated with housing justice and mental health groups, such as Housing Works and the New York Art Therapy Association. These projects explored the intersection of housing, mental health, and racial injustice. At demonstrations, we provided free art supplies (large and small scale canvases, paint, brushes, cardboard for sign-making, paper, pens, and chalk) to animate public spaces with justice-oriented messages. Additionally, we facilitated the creation of signs and banners for marches, vigils, and other community events.

Since the protests, we have successfully placed artifacts from these demonstrations in the collections of the Museum of the City of New York, the New York Historical Society, and MOCADA. Some of our works are currently on view at the NY Historical Society’s exhibition “Picture the Dream: The Story of the Civil Rights Movement Through Children’s Books.” The placement of these artworks in arts institutions is guided by the value of archiving social movements and the importance of institutional memory. As a group, we have found meaning and inspiration in bringing creative tools to communities ranging in age and background, and sharing their work with New York institutions.
